Happy Halloween! What Are Your Favourite Memories?
October 31, 2024 11:00 amHappy Halloween! You can feel the spookiness in the air. I love this time of year and I love that sense of anything could happen on Halloween day. I also love the memories it brings back.
I think of Halloween as a kid and all the different costumes. Remember the plastic sheets with the plastic masks? Yep. Me too. The elastic always broke before you got out of the house, and most of the time the weather was so cold you had to wear your winter coat over your costume anyway, so really, your costume was a broken mask. (smile)
Most of the time our costumes were thrown together and that was always fun. I loved Halloween. Pretending to be someone else for a night. And of course, the candy.
As a parent there was always a bit of chaos around Halloween. Making treats to bring to share with the class, running around to find costumes after they changed their mind half a dozen times, staying up late to put finishing touches on the costumes, not a single one ever looking like the Pinterest image they were inspired by. Racing home from work to get everyone ready for the big night.
The pumpkin carving, baking pumpkin seeds, Halloween candy. Now that all our kids are out of the house this year it feels really strange to not have any of it. Such an odd feeling. And I kinda miss that craziness.
I will be making mummy dogs – it’s tradition. And I will do my best to convince my husband to watch Hotel Transylvania with me. I’ve outgrown the scary movies. I don’t want to be scared any more. I want to eat candy and laugh and not miss my kids.
What are some of your favourite memories? Did you have a favourite costume? A favourite house?
We will be playing some fun Halloween songs for you today to get you into the Halloween spirit including the “Monster Mash”. This song goes back to 1962. Fun fact – this spooky Halloween favourite is sung by Bobby “Boris” Pickett, a nightclub performer who does a really great impression of Boris Karloff, who is known for his role as Frankenstein’s monster. In the song, Bobby plays the legendary Doctor, but when his monster comes to life, instead of taking over the town, he throws a party. The song spends two weeks at number one and sells over a millioin copies, making it the most popular Halloween song of all time and one of the most popular novelty songs ever recorded.
And, fun fact, where does the title come from? Why are the monsters doing the “mash”? Because, the Mashed Potato was the big dance craze at the time. Clever.
What are your favourite Halloween shows or movies? My kids are into all the scary stuff, but I also get a little nostalgia around the holidays and Halloween is no different. Anyone who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s will remember It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! Sadly, it’s not FREE anymore. We used to be able to catch it on one of the major networks, but since Apple TV+ bought the rights years ago, it’s now only available with a paid subscription. That’s sad to me. Stuff like that should remain free. We’ll have to make do with a few fun clips to remind us of the old days. (smile) Though you get a free trial and then cancel (smile). Just sayin’.
Have a fun, safe Halloween!!!!!!
