Remember This One?
February 11, 2025 11:06 amIt’s been 14 years since the release of the viral hit song “Friday” and now that I bring it back, my apologies if it gets stuck in your head again.
Do you remember when this song came out? It’s safe to say it drove people nuts, but still, it went viral. It was everywhere, no matter how hard you tried to avoid it.
Rebecca Black acknowledged the milestone on social media yesterday by pointing out that the song is now older than she was at the time of its release.
She was only 13 at the time the song was released on February 10, 2011. And people weren’t shy to show how much they hated the song. Critics labeled “Friday” as the “worst song ever.”
She received death threats by some, and says there were people she knew at school and in her inner circle who verbally abused her. Complete strangers from all over the world using social media to “deride me, degrade me and even worse; some people threatened my life.” She says even though a lot of it were people poking fun and laughing, she says at that age “That can be like, slightly crushing as a kid”. Rebecca would leave school to begin homeschooling.
It wasn’t all bad. Katy Perry invited her to be a part of her “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” music video and Lady Gaga called her a “genius”.
She has previously said she knew she loved to perform and she hoped to go to New York and pursue her dream to become a musical theater actor and saw the chance to make a pop music video would help her get there.
