Tasty Tuesday – What Is Still Worth Making From “Scratch”?

I came across this article today about foods just not worth making from scratch.

Like pesto.  Sour dough bread.  French onion soup.  Croissants.  Pumpkin puree.

There are a lot of foods on that list of suggestions from people that – to be honest – I wouldn’t even THINK to attempt.

I have made pie crust from scratch.  I actually used to ONLY make it from scratch.  The more you do it, the easier it gets.  These days it’s more about having the time to invest in making something from scratch because usually it’s time consuming.  And it can actually be more expensive to get the ingredients to do it yourself.

So, yeah, I cheat these days.  If I want an apple pie – I buy the premade crust.  But I still cut up the apples and add the sugar and spices myself.  I still ‘bake it with love” as my mom used to say.

I still make mac and cheese from an old recipe book.  I love to make tea biscuits on a Sunday afternoon.  I have a pancake recipe my kids request that I use for those big breakfasts on the weekends or for Shrove Tuesday (it’s coming up March 4th).

I do make butter tarts the same way.  I buy the shells but I have my own recipe for the filling.

I make French Onion soup from scratch and I’ve started making my own granola which I love.

I tried making scones once.  They were yummy.  But again, sometimes it’s easier to just to buy one already made.

I’ve made spaghetti sauce with ripe tomatoes and have to admit, that sauce is noticeably different than any sauce in a can.

I’ve never made cake from scratch but I do have an amazing brownie recipe that I love.

What, if anything, do YOU still make from scratch?  Is there an old family recipe you still use?  Is there any one thing that you absolutely refuse to buy?

Let me know!

I love to make things and I love spending time in the kitchen.  But you have to be in the “mood” to bake or create from scratch and you have to have the time to commit to it.

Once in a while, it’s a really nice treat to bake something sweet.  With the long weekend ahead of us, maybe it’s time to get the cookbook out again.
