The View From Here – More Than A Hockey Game
February 21, 2025 10:57 amI have never been so invested in a hockey game in my life. Seriously. NEVER.
My husband went to bed before the end of the second period and I – (who admittedly does not love sports) – stayed up and continued to watch the hockey game. Yeah, THAT hockey game.
Four Nations Face Off. Canada VS USA.
We are used to rivalry. We’ve done this before. But this game was DIFFERENT. With all that is going on with our two countries right now – we needed this game and we needed this win.
The energy in that building was electric.
I will be honest. I did not stay up for the end. I couldn’t. It was too close. I didn’t want to see Canada lose. My heart was already feeling broken from the boos from the crowd. During the anthem, as Chantal Kreviazuk sang, as the players names were announced as they took to the ice – I struggled with that. Even though you can hear people singing over the boos.
Can we NOT do that anymore? Can we get back to a place where we can cheer for our team, but not be so vocal in expressing hate for the other. That goes both ways. We should not be doing that either. That was hard on the heart.
So I went to bed. Not knowing the outcome. I was hesitant to search for the score when I woke up this morning. I wasn’t ready to accept a loss, but when I started to see the cheers online – I searched for video of the win and couldn’t help but cry.
Connor McDavid. In overtime. Brought this country to it’s feet in celebration. Such a beautiful goal. That to this country meant so much.
I don’t think it’s possible to feel more proud of this country in this moment.
Way to go Team Canada!!!!! Our hearts are bursting today.
