How are you getting through Monday?

It’s a famous scene from the 1999 film “Office Space” when we heard the phrase “sounds like somebody’s got a case of the Mondays””

“A case of the Mondays” is a phrase that describes those negative feelings associated with Mondays like being unmotivated or stressed.  That feeling of dread, or sadness that some people experience at the beginning of the work week.

Is there any science to it?  Anything to back it up? Research has suggested that Mondays are biologically stressful and associated with lower mood, giving the expression some basis in fact.

So what do YOU DO when you get a case of “the Mondays?”

It’s a good idea to set yourself up and prepare the day before.

Get good sleep.

Plan ahead: Tidy up your personal space, make a to-do list for the week, and pack your lunch.

Prep your morning: Set up the coffee machine or get your outfit ready the night before.

Start your Monday positively

Wake up earlier: Give yourself extra time to get ready without feeling rushed.

Engage in a morning ritual: Start with a walk, meditation, or brain puzzles to feel productive before work.

Fuel your body: Eat a protein-filled breakfast and drink plenty of water.

Set an intention: Take a moment to set a positive and achievable goal for the day.

Manage your workday

Prioritize tasks: Focus on the top two or three most important things to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Schedule breaks: Plan short breaks to step away, stretch, or walk outside to reset your brain.

Listen to music or a podcast: Do something enjoyable during your commute or at your desk.

Limit distractions: Avoid checking social media until you are ready to start the workday.

Plan for the rest of the week and beyond

Have something to look forward to: Schedule a fun activity after work, like meeting a friend or pursuing a hobby.

Reward yourself: Plan a treat for yourself, whether it’s your favorite lunch or an enjoyable activity after work.

Focus on others: Do something nice for a coworker or customer to lift your spirits and theirs.

*****Seek professional help: If you consistently struggle with low mood, consider seeking professional help.
