Disney+ Adds Content Warning To ‘The Muppet Show’
February 23, 2021 10:47 amIf you were reading this hoping to be mad by the headline, I’m sorry to say I actually want to clear up the unnecessary controversy.
Like in a few other productions, Disney has added a disclaimer at the beginning of the newly added “The Muppets” show now on Disney+. It reads:
This programme includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now.
Some people are upset that they added this disclaimer, as they don’t feel it’s necessary.
The show premiered in 1976, a very different time. Some character depictions fall on stereotypes, and there’s some pretty notably unmannerly occurrences.
An example of this was pointed out by someone on Twitter,

If you want to check out that scene, check it out on YouTube here!
As pointed out by Disney, there are only really about 5 episodes in which the disclaimer is necessary.
In the disclaimer, they also state,
Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.
I truly don’t believe this deserves any kind of controversy. There’s way too many good Muppets moments to boycott the show anyway.
Like this one!
