Jay’s Review #4:  Skeleton Crew by Stephen King

Let me say first, I’m a pretty big Stephen King fan.  He’s not the greatest writer in the world but the dude can tell a story.  In the mid 80’s he was topping bestsellers list with novels like It, Tommyknockers, Christine, and Pet Semetary, so it makes sense that his publishers would jump at the chance to publish a collection of short stories.  I’ve had a copy of Skeleton Crew on my bookshelf since I was a kid but just decided to read it straight through last week, and let me tell you this.  It’s OK.

Of the 22 stories, half of them are kind of a waste of time.  Ones I enjoyed include The Monkey (about a scary monkey doll), Gramma (about a scary gramma), and Survivor Type (about a guy who eats himself to stay alive).  Sometimes fun and frequently twisted, Monkey Shines is a decent read for a stormy night but don’t go out of your way.
