Celebrity Status – JUNO Winners, Box Office, And Syd + Glenn?
March 31, 2025 10:07 amFor Monday, March 31st:
At the JUNO Awards last night, Michael Bublé hosted and performed and his monologue was an ode to Canada. Calgary’s Tate McRae was the big winner, taking home four awards, including Single of the year, Pop album of the year and Artist of the year. Songwriter of the year (non-performer) went to Lowell, also from Calgary, for her part in Beyoncé’s ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ and ‘Bodyguard’ as well as ‘Takes One to Know One’ by the Beaches.
Newcomer Nemahsis beat out Owen Riegling for Breakthrough Artist of the year. Rap single of the year was ‘Shut Up’ by Jessie Reyez… and Snotty Nose Rez Kids became the first Indigenous group to win the Juno award for Rap Album of the year at Saturday night’s Juno Awards Gala where many awards were handed out before the broadcast on Sunday.
At the movies, the Jason Statham thriller “A Working Man” snuck past “Snow White” to take No. 1 at the box office with more than $15 million in ticket sales in what’s being called a bit of an upset. “Snow White” was expected to stay atop the box office, but it earned just $14.2 million in its second week for second place. “Death of a Unicorn” with Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega was only good enough for fifth place overall.
In other awards show news, ‘Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent’ leads nominations heading into the Canadian Screen Awards, set to be handed out over a series of five awards shows, May 30 – June 1. The show leads both television and overall nominations with 20.
And ICYMI: some straight up gossip! Sydney Sweeney was spotted with Glen Powell last week, just days after reports that she called off her wedding to Jonathan Davino. Some reports say she and Davino didn’t break up, just became un-engaged. Sorta feels like a first step, no? But as with most things, time will tell.
