Who doesn’t love butter tarts? But do you love them as much as this guy?
A man from Grimsby, Ontario is pushing for an official National Butter Tart Day. He filed a petition with the House of Commons earlier this year with the goal of giving the dessert the recognition it deserves.
If approved, the holiday would land on April 19th, honouring Mary MacLeod, a key figure in the dessert’s history. Mary Ethel MacLeod Is credited with the first known published butter tart recipe, appearing in the 1900 Women’s Auxiliary of the Royal Victoria Hospital Cookbook in Barrie, Ontario. Her original, simple recipe included 1 cup sugar, ½ cup butter, 2 eggs, and 1 cup currants
The petition needs at least 500 signatures by June 25th to move forward—and right now, it’s sitting around 285, most of them from Ontario. Sign the petition here.
