Don’t believe everything you read on the internet; Sharks are not on their way to the Great Lakes.

A viral post on social media stated that great white sharks are heading into the Great Lakes—but experts say it’s completely false. Great Lakes water is fresh and cold, conditions great whites simply can’t survive in. Unlike species such as the bull shark, great whites can’t adapt to freshwater.

Even getting there is nearly impossible. A shark would have to travel hundreds of miles inland, navigating a series of locks and barriers—and somehow bypass Niagara Falls, which drops 167 feet.

Back in 1937 in Alton, Illinois, a fishermen reportedly caught a five-foot bull shark hundreds of miles from the ocean. Some scientists say it’s plausible, while others believe it may have been an elaborate hoax.
