June 3rd is the 154th day of the year. There are 211 days remaining until the end of the year.

Higher prices at the pumps today – gas jumped about eight cents per litre overnight.

The increase follows a week price drops. A litre of gas in C-K should be close to the 178-cent mark.

More price swings may be ahead as summer travel season ramps up and global oil markets remain volatile.

Warm again today in C-K, with the highs climbing to 27°C.

Not all of Canada is warming up, quite the dramatic mix of weather for early June across the country. In Newfoundland and Labrador, parts of the St. John’s saw close to five centimetres of snow to start the week, and Nova Scotia dealt with frost advisories.

Manitoba is dealing with near-30 degree heat warnings, while Saskatchewan, Alberta, and southeastern British Columbia are facing heavy rain alerts, with some regions having possible flooding concerns.

Holy Mackinaw – Joe’s going to get a doctorate robe today.

The former voice of the Toronto Maple Leafs will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from University of Windsor during Spring Convocation, recognizing a broadcasting career that spanned more than four decades.

Bowen wrapped up his final season calling Leafs games earlier this year, closing the book on one of the most recognizable careers in Canadian hockey media. Known for his iconic “Holy Mackinaw!” goal calls, Bowen became the soundtrack of Saturday nights and playoff runs for generations of Leafs fans.

Tributes have poured in from former players, broadcasters, and fans across the hockey world, many praising Bowen’s passion, energy, and unmistakable voice that helped define the Leafs experience for more than 40 years.

Two Quebec communities are locked in a feud over who deserves to be called the “Maple Capital.”

For decades, Plessisville has branded itself as the “World’s Capital of Maple.” But earlier this year, Mirabel trademarked the title “International Capital of Maple,” sparking outrage from Plessisville officials.

Quebec produces nearly three-quarters of the world’s maple syrup, making the title a matter of pride — and tourism dollars. Mirabel says the two titles are different enough to coexist, while Plessisville argues its maple identity is being copied. For now, the syrup showdown remains at a stalemate.

Today is the 101st anniversary of the first flight of the Goodyear Blimp.

On June 3, 1925, an airship built by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company named “Pilgrim” took to the skies over Akron, Ohio. The military used Goodyear blimps for observation and reconnaissance during World Wars I and II. Goodyear built approximately 25 blimps for the U.S. military between 1917 and 1925, Pilgrim became the company’s first airship to be used for marketing and public relations. Only four Goodyear Blimps still exist.

Each blimp can carry nine passengers along with the crew. The seats have no seat belts.

If punctured, the worst that will happen is that the blimp will slowly lose altitude. Good thing, too, since the company reports that a blimp is shot at about 20 times a year.

Keep an eye this weekend, as the blimp is scheduled to circle the Nascar race at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday.
