The Gordie Howe International Bridge officially opened to traffic on Monday, marking a historic new link between Windsor and Detroit.

Gordie Howe, the grandson of “Mr. Hockey,” and his wife Margaret were the first to cross around 9:45 a.m., roughly two hours before the public was allowed onto the bridge.

The six-lane crossing provides a direct highway connection between Highway 401 and Interstate 75, improving one of North America’s busiest trade corridors.

The standard one-way toll for a passenger vehicle crossing the Gordie Howe International Bridge is $8. Commercial vehicles are charged $12 per axle. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the multi-use path free of charge, when it opens August 5th.

The second week of the annual Athletes’ Fuel Cup hockey tournament faces off tonight at Thames Campus arena.
