Emancipation Day is the day when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 became law across the British Empire, including Canada on August 1, 1834. In 2021, the federal government voted unanimously to officially recognize August 1st as Emancipation Day.

It’s Civic Holiday Weekend in Ontario.

In other provinces and municipalities, the holiday is known by a variety of names, including British Columbia Day in British Columbia, New Brunswick Day in New Brunswick, Saskatchewan Day in Saskatchewan, Heritage Day in Alberta, Natal Day in Nova Scotia, and as Terry Fox Day in Manitoba; all of these places celebrate the date as a provincial statutory holiday.

In Ontario, it is technically a municipal holiday, as it is not designated as an official statutory holiday by provincial legislation.

It always lands on the first Monday in August.

Banks, government offices, and libraries will be closed for the Civic Holiday.

There will be no mail delivery or garbage and recycling pick-up Monday. All leaf and yard depot are open on the holiday.

Municipal indoor and outdoor pools will be open, as will the Blenheim and Thames Campus Arenas. All other arenas will be shut.

All RideCK transit services will not operate on Monday, August 3rd. Service resumes Tuesday.

The LCBO will be open. Only the Richmond St., Chatham, Tilbury and Blenheim Beer Stores will be open, from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
