Remembering Princess Diana

Sorry not sorry, but I’m taking time to remember the late Princess Diana.

29 years ago the world lost someone special to many. It was August 31, 1997 that Princess Diana was killed in a tragic car crash. The world stopped and so many people all over the world struggled to come to terms with the loss. I think we all remember where we were when we heard the news.

I remember driving home after a night out with my husband and hearing the news on the radio and feeling shocked, and also reluctant to believe the news.

For those of us who have followed the royals for a while, who got up in the middle of the night to watch the wedding of Lady Diana to Prince Charles – who followed the fairytale; this news hit hard.

It’s not how it was supposed to be. She was finding her way in the world again. Without the Prince. She was making her own happily ever after, but that was taken away.

I remember watching the funeral. Focused on her boys walking behind the casket. As someone who lost her own mom at a young age, I could relate and my heart broke for them.

I hope the world never forgets Princess Diana. Her gift of love and compassion. Her sense of fashion. Her love of life and family. No, not perfect. But there was something about her that fascinated so many of us.

Diana’s brother Charles Spencer recently announced a new book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, expected to come out September 22 is set to tell the story of Diana’s life from his unique perspective. In a press release he shared “The aim of this book is to tell the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective, just as I attempted to do when speaking at her funeral. As with my eulogy, I want to speak on Diana’s behalf and do so in an openly positive way.”

Gone at 36. Life cut short. Today we remember the People’s Princess. The Queen of People’s Hearts.

Would love if you shared your thoughts – anytime – cbuchanan@blackburnmedia.ca

I love this article that speaks of Diana’s strengths, and how she inspired so many of us to care about others and ourselves.
