Guns N’ Roses Week

Guns N’ Roses formed in Los Angeles in 1985, born out of the merger of two local bands, Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns. The classic lineup came together fast: frontman Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler. While their Sunset Strip peers were doubling down on hairspray and glitter, GN’R brought something dirtier, meaner, and more dangerous — a raw blend of punk attitude, blues swagger, and arena-sized rock ambition.

Their 1987 debut, Appetite for Destruction, didn’t just make waves — it became the best-selling debut album in U.S. history, moving over 30 million copies worldwide. Suddenly, a band that had been crashing on couches and playing dive bars was selling out stadiums on every continent.

The Biggest Hits

You can’t talk about classic rock radio without these tracks in heavy rotation:

  • “Welcome to the Jungle” — The snarling, siren-like opening riff that announced GN’R’s arrival. Pure menace.
  • “Sweet Child O’ Mine” — Slash’s iconic opening lick is one of the most recognizable guitar moments in rock history. Their only #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • “Paradise City” — A stadium anthem if there ever was one. That double-time outro still brings crowds to their feet.
  • “Patience” — Proof these guys could put down the electric guitars and still wreck you emotionally.
  • “November Rain” — An eight-minute epic from 1991’s Use Your Illusion I, complete with one of the most legendary music videos of the MTV era.
  • “Don’t Cry” and “You Could Be Mine” — Both staples of the Use Your Illusion era, when GN’R could do absolutely no wrong.

The Legacy

The Use Your Illusion I and II albums dropped simultaneously in 1991 and cemented Guns N’ Roses as the biggest rock band on the planet. Lineup changes, long breaks, and the infamous 15-year wait for Chinese Democracy couldn’t dim their legend. When Axl, Slash, and Duff finally reunited for the Not in This Lifetime… tour in 2016, fans flocked to see them — and it became one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time.

Nearly four decades in, Guns N’ Roses still represents everything classic rock is about: attitude, danger, monster riffs, and songs that refuse to be forgotten.
