Here’s what is important to know today.

  • Homecoming is back: It’s that time of year again. When thousands of students flock to Western University for its 74th Homecoming this Friday. Every year the university hosts homecoming events for its students with a football game. This year Western will be playing the Ottawa Gee-Gee’s on Saturday. The main concern for city residents is the large unsanctioned parties that come along with it. Last year over 7,000 people attended, costing the city over $250,000 in damages. The Project LEARN task force will be out this weekend helping to prevent such parties. University Drive Bridge will be closed for motor traffic along with other campus streets.

  • Debris from missing F-35 found: On Sunday, the US Marines reported a “mishap” with one of their F-35B fighter jets and reported it missing after the pilot ejected from the craft. Surprisingly after 24h, debris from the jet was found near Williamsburg County in South Carolina. Witnesses say they heard a boom before the jet crashed in a wooded area. Pilot of the jet ejected and parachuted safely into a residential backyard. Questions arise as people wonder how the jet got lost, and how it could have flown 100 km pilotless before crashing. The $100 million jet is apparently the most advanced fighter jet in the U.S arsenal.

  • Brescia-Western University merger: The only ‘all-womens’ University will soon be a thing of the past. On Thursday both Western and Brescia University made an announcement that the schools ‘agreed to a strategic integration’. Operations for Brescia will cease in May 2024. The roughly 1,200 current students at Brescia will be able to continue and complete their degree. The University was founded in 1919 by the Ursaline Sister to help “bridge the gap” for women’s education. Western will assume off of Brescia’s assets including full and part time staff.
