  • Inflation up 4 per cent in August: The rising price of gas has bumped inflation up 4% in August. On Tuesday, Stats Canada released its August Consumer Price index. For the second straight month, it explains why inflation rose. Gas prices rose 0.8% from August 2022. Although food prices aren’t climbing as fast, Canadians still saw a 6.9% increase since August 2022. Mortgage interest rates also rose 30.9% compared to the 30.6% increase in July.

 

  • Strike deadline expanded: Unifor and Ford have still not come to a contract agreement to prevent a strike. They have extended the strike deadline for another 24 hours. After 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Ford Canada made a statement saying members of the union are ready to walk off the job if no agreement is reached. The two companies are on hold until a deal is made.

 

  • EMDC inmates win $33M lawsuit: McKenzie Lake Lawyers and the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre have reached a settlement in their class action lawsuit. Ontario will be paying out almost $33 million to inmates due to conditions and mistreatment of the inmates. Anyone who was incarcerated between the years of January 1, 2010 to May 18, 2017 will be eligible to receive some of the Johnson/Hayne action settlement. And anyone incarcerated between May 18, 2017 to November 10, 2021 you would be eligible for the Sabourin action. 20 people have died while being incarcerated at EMDC since 2009.

 

  • Road Closure: University Drive bridge will be closed from 6am to 6pm. People are asked to enter the University through Windermere Rd or Western Rd.
