  • OPP launches Festive RIDE program: OPP all over Southwestern Ontario have officially launched their annual Festive Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program on Tuesday. The aim of the program is to keep drunk drivers off the streets especially during the holiday season. Inspector Mike McConnell, traffic and marine manager with the West Region OPP said they had 18 fatalities this year where alcohol played a part. The OPP have conducted 7,170 RIDE checks, which is 166 per cent more than last year. The program will run until January 1, 2024 where they will set up checkpoints throughout the city everyday. Over 2,000 impaired driving charges were laid so far in 2023. That is an 11 per cent increase from the previous year which had 1,801 at this time last year. London police, along with St. Thomas, Alymer, Oneida on the Thames and Strathroy police services will join the OPP in the program.

 

  • New homes on market hit record high: According to the London St. Thomas Association of Realtors, the current local market is “leaning in favour of home buyers.” In its latest release, LSTAR said 488 homes have changed hands in October, which is a small drop from October 2022, but an increase from September 2023. New listings hit a record high of 1,232 for the month of October. Chairman of LSTAR Adam Miller says “In this setting, local homebuyers find themselves with a wealth of choices and a little extra breathing room in their property search. However, some of them are opting to play the waiting game, keeping a close eye on interest rates and wondering if they’ve truly reached their peak or if they still have room to grow,” Average home prices have slightly dipped to $629,605 for October from September’s $633,848 average.

 

  • Air Transat doubles up on flights to sunny destinations: Planning a trip to get away from the snow this winter? Starting in December, the London International Airport announced Air Transat will be doubling weekly flights to Mexico and the Dominican Republic. The once a week, non stop flights services launched last weekend which will now be twice a week starting December 21. Currently flights go from London to Cancun on Saturdays, and London to Punta Cana Sundays. They will now be adding a Thursday flight to Cancun and a Friday flight to Punta Cana. Winter flight season will run until April 2024.
