- $50M in casino upgrades: The multi million dollar upgrade to the Gateways Casino London at the Western Fair District has finally started. The $50 million dollar investment will bring hundreds of new slots, live table games, and even a restaurant with an outdoor patio. Renovations will take about 27 months and will produce over 100 jobs. Completion of the project is estimated to be in 2025. Gateways is the largest casino entertainment company in Canada.
- More and more people are looking for jobs: The unemployment rate in London has jumped from 5% to 5.6%. In a survey conducted by Statistics Canada, there are 6,300 people looking for work and only 4,300 jobs available in August. Nationally the numbers are the same with Canada having a 5.5% unemployment rate and 1.2 million people looking for jobs. In young people, males decreased in unemployment while females increased. September’s unemployment numbers will be released October 6th.
- Dan Masterson sentenced to 30 years in prison: A Los Angeles court has convicted and sentenced “That 70’s Show” star Dan Masterson to 30 years in state prison. Masterson was accused of raping two women in 2003. The 47 year old has been in custody since May and will only be eligible for parole after 25 ½ years. Masterson also starred in the Netflix series “The Ranch” with co-star Ashton Kutcher but was removed from the show after the accusations.
- London local inducted to the hall of fame: The Canada Sports Hall of Fame will be inducting its class of 2023 in October. Londoner Tessa Virtue and Ilderton’s Scott Moir will receive the Order of Sport and be among the 2023 class. Scott and Tessa are the most decorated figure skaters in the world earning five Olympic medals, three World Championships, eight Canadian National Championships, and won the Four Continents Championships three times. They’ve been partners for 20 years until retiring in 2019.
- Going for bronze: Team Canada and Team USA will be battling for the bronze medal at the FIBA World Cup. After a disappointing loss to Serbia Friday morning, and USA’s loss to Germany, they will now be facing each other Sunday for bronze. RJ Barrett of the New York Knicks led Canada with 23 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists, sadly that wasn’t enough for Canada.
