Headlines to know for today;

  • The Future of London’s oldest high school: The future of Regina Mundi College, one of London’s oldest high schools, is in jeopardy. The London District Catholic School board has filed an application with city council to demolish the building. Located at 5200 Wellington Rd S, the school was built in 1963 as a junior seminar. It was later converted into a high school in 1987. Since the building was not originally meant to be a high school, and due to its age, a new building is needed. The LDCSB has also filed an application with the Ontario Ministry of Education for a new school pending approval. With over 700 current students, the timeline for demolition is unclear. Given the building’s age, demolition will require formal review from the Ontario Heritage Act. The LDCSB’s head office sits on the same plot of land as Regina Mundi, but will not be affected by the teardown.

  • A $50k reward for a 40 year old murder: After interviewing witnesses, following leads, even using new technology, the murder of Donna Jean Awcock is still open. The Ontario Provincial Police have been trying to find the 17 year olds killer for over 40 years. Reported missing on October 13, 1983, Awcock was babysitting the night before. She made an early morning stop at a variety store, but never returned home. The next day, just two kilometers away from her home, her body was found near the Thames River at 5:15 pm. The cause of death was strangulation. A $50k reward has been offered by the Ontario government for anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the killer. Anyone with information is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
