What to know for today.

  • City council approves of London’s newest tallest building: A proposal to build the tallest building in the city has received approval from city council. With 11-2 councillors voting in favour, the 50 King St and 399 Ridout St properties will be home to a 27 and 50 storey tower. The two towers will overlook the Fork of the Thames. They will include 800 residential units, commercial and retail spaces. Instead of having affordable housing in the building, York Development will be donating $600,000 to Indwell , a charity that builds affordable housing. Sam Trosow of Ward 6 and David Ferreria who represents downtown voted against the building stating heritage site concerns and “too many outstanding issues”.

  • September’s rent numbers remain high but steady: For the month of September, London’s apartment rental prices did not see much of a change from the previous month. Asking prices around the country did see a rise as the average in Canada rose to $2,149 for apartments, townhouses and condos. This beat August’s record price of $2,117. In London, the average asking price of a one bedroom apartment was $1,756 which is a little lower, but still steady with August’s average of $1,800. This is a 0.7 per cent decrease from September 2022’s numbers. According to a report done by Rentals.ca, London ranked No. 22 out of 35 cities in Canada for highest rent prices. Putting London below Kitchener, Waterloo and Hamilton, but still higher than Windsor, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg.
