What to know for today.

  • Feds approve First nations child welfare benefit: To compensate over 300,000 first nations children and families over underfunded on reserve services, a federal judge has approved of an over $23 billion settlement. This comes after the Assembly of First Nations and the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society launched a human rights complaint to Ottawa over 15 years ago. Executive direction Cindy Blackstock of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society tweeted on X her support to the victims. Last year Ottawa offered $20 billion for child-welfare funding and another $20 billion to compensate, but a tribunal rejected the proposal. Another part of the proposed settlement is an apology from the prime minister.
