Headlines to know for today.

  • GM contract ratified: Unifor and General Motors have reached an agreement for a three year contract over the weekend. The approved contract will see a 20 per cent increase in wages for workers and a 25 per cent increase for skilled workers. Unifor says 80.5 per cent of members voted in favor at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, Woodstock Parts Distribution and St. Catherines Powertrain Plant. After a brief strike last week, the two sides reached a deal and the contract will expire in September 2026. “Over the life of the agreement, hundreds of temporary part-time workers will also be converted to permanent full-time positions,” said Unifor. Next week, Unifor will continue talks with Stellantis with the goal to reach an agreement. The same contract reached with Ford and General Motors is the expectation.

  • London hospital subject to new clinical sedation methods: London Children’s Hospital and Toronto SickKids Hospital are looking for 60 critically ill paediatric patients for a new sedation method study. Reducing neurological complications, the new method is believed to improve the outcome for patients. Funded by the Canadian Institution for Health Research, the study will be conducted by Lawson Research, Sunnybrook Research, and SickKids. Researchers say inhaled sedation is commonly used in operating rooms and are inexpensive and widely available. In the study, 30 patients will be given sedation by inhaling and the other 30 will be given by IV. Once the trial is complete, scientists hope to expand on a national level.
