Headlines to know for this weekend

  • Province invests $51.6M for new high school: The London District Catholic School Board will be building a new high school to replace Regina Mundi Catholic College. On Thursday, the province announced that it will provide $51.6 million in building the new school. In a statement, the Director of Education Vince Romeo said “This is amazing news for high school students in south London”. The school will be built on the same grounds as Regina Mundi, and will accommodate 700 students. Construction will begin spring 2024.

  • Picketers hit as car drove through strike: As Western engineers were striking on Friday, a car drove through the picket line hitting three people and injuring one. The International Union on Operating Engineers said that the injury was “not severe” and they were taken to hospital. Due to staffing issues, safety concerns and non-competitive pay, members of the union have been on strike since Thursday. Picketers have been standing on crosswalks blocking the traffic. Unable to record the drivers license plate number, the car sped off after hitting the picketers.

  • London doctor trapped in Gaza now volunteering: Dr. Ehab Bader flew to Gaza from London to visit family. Now trapped in Palestine, he decided to put his skills to use and volunteer at Gaza’s largest hospital. As medical supplies run low, the hospital is full of people in need of life saving treatment. The 47 year old doctor traveled to Gaza just two weeks before Hamas attacked Israel. With an overflowing morgue, Bader volunteered at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Bader said that every hospital bed is full and patients are crowding the hallways. He also said if he was given the chance to evacuate, he’s not sure what he will do as he doesn’t want to leave Gazan in desperate need of help.
