  • Lighting of the Lights: London will be ringing in the Christmas season with the Lighting of the Lights at Victoria Park tonight. The London Symphonia along with holiday carollers will be taking the stage followed by The Rockin’ Reindeer featuring Doug and Bizz Varty. The family of the late London Fire Department Captain Chris Bruinink, who recently lost a battle to cancer, will be flipping the switch, turning on all 75,000 lights, turning the park into a winter wonderland. Fire trucks will be parked throughout the park flashing lights in tribute to Bruininks 22 years of service. Londoners have been kicking off the holiday season with the Lighting of the Lights since 1958. In addition, there will be food vendors, a 360 degrees photo booth, and City Hall will be hosting an observation deck. Hours can be found on the city’s website. Alongside the lights, Today the Holly Jolly Market kicks off. The event will start at 5:30 pm and runs until 7:30 pm.

 

  • New Chair and Vice-Chair elected for TVDSB 2024: The Thames Valley District School Board has elected London Trustee Beth Mai as their new Chair of Board and Oxford County Trustee David Cripps as Vice-Chair. Mai has been involved with the school board for over 22 years, but this is her first term as London Trustee for Wards 7,8,9,10 and 13. She was the Vice-Chair for 2023 Cripps is also in his first term as a Trustee and has worked closely with the board for 15 years. In a statement on Wednesday, Mai said “I will continue to prioritize productive and collaborative relationships with Thames Valley’s staff, school communities, the broader community, and fellow elected officials. I look forward to continuing the work of this dedicated group of Trustees as well as our hard-working staff to serve the needs of our growing and diverse board of over 84,000 students,”

 

  • Rainbow Bridge reopens after deadly crash: The Canadian Border Services Agency reopened Rainbow Bridge border crossing last evening at 6:30 pm. The bridge was closed Wednesday evening as a vehicle exploded on the crossing resulting in the deaths of two people. The FBI and CBSA shut down services to investigate possible terrorist attacks. The CBSA announced Thursday on X (formerly Twitter) there was “no evidence of terrorism at this time.”  The Niagara border will resume services today at 6 pm.
