  • Restrictions on overnight parking starts: Overnight parking restrictions come into effect today. Drivers will now be required to obtain a special pass in order to park overnight between the hours of 3am to 5am. The bylaw comes into effect today, and will continue until April 30, 2024. Special passes are issued 48 hours in advance and vehicles without a pass could be ticketed. Click here to register for a pass. Commercial, trailer, oversized, and recreational vehicles are not eligible for passes.

 

  • Gas tax cuts extended: The provincial government introduced legislation extending the gas and fuel tax cut until June 2024. The Ford government introduced the tax cut back in June of 2022, and if passed cuts will continue. According to The Canadian Taxpayers Federation, two vehicle families will save an average of $500. Premier Doug Ford said “We know every dollar helps, and this gas tax cut is another way we’re keeping costs down for Ontario families and businesses,”. Ontario will be releasing its Fall Economic Statement on Thursday. 

 

  • Unifor and Stellantis strike tentative deal: After a seven hour strike, Stellantis and Unifor members agreed on a tentative deal for its 8,200 workers. The deal which was announced on X entails a 20 per cent wage increase for production workers, and a 25 per cent increase for skilled workers. Full time workers will also receive a $10,000 signing bonus and a $4,000 bonus for part time workers. Unifor has ratified similar agreements with Ford and General Motors in October and said ‘It demonstrated the strength of our union and provided your bargaining team’. The United Auto Workers union in the United States has also ratified deals with Stellantis and Ford, while General Motors workers continue to strike over the US.
