Celebrity Status: RIP Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton, the irrepressible singer-songwriter, actress and entrepreneur who penned chart toppers such as “9 to 5” and turned her namesake Tennessee theme park Dollywood into one of the world’s top amusement destinations, died Tuesday. She was 80.

Parton died peacefully in Nashville, a rep announced.

She announced in September that she was postponing a set of Las Vegas concerts to deal with “some health challenges.” THR reported days later that she would miss the Governors Awards, where she was to receive the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, in November, and she canceled scheduled Las Vegas residency dates for September in May.

Her husband of nearly 58 years, businessman Carl Dean, died at age 82 on March 3, 2025.

Dolly Parton‘s reps have revealed her cause of death. The iconic singer died after a “brief battle” with cancer at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, her reps said Tuesday.

“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand,” the statement from her reps to People magazine read.

Dolly Parton’s “Dolly: A True Original Musical” will open on Broadway “as was Dolly’s wish.” The musical tells the life story of the country-pop superstar.

In a statement to Variety, the producers confirmed, “As was Dolly’s wish, the Broadway production of ‘Dolly: A True Original Musical’ will begin previews December 7 at the St. James Theatre in New York City with opening set for January 19, 2027, what would have been her 81st birthday.”

Amazon-MGM Studios released the first footage from Ali G: Who Iz I? (below), which returns Cohen’s hip-hop journalist character in a feature film “documentary” following Cohen as he unleashes Ali G on an unsuspecting public.

Ali G: Who Iz I? will be released in theaters Oct. 23.
