Celebrity Status – CCMAs, Box Office, TIFF And The Voice

For Monday, September 21st: Happy Earth, Wind and Fire Day! (Do you remembah…?)

B.C. native Cameron Whitcomb wasn’t there but he won three of the night’s biggest honours at the CCMA Awards on Saturday: Entertainer of the Year, Male Artist and Album of the Year. Last year he picked up Breakthrough Artist as well as the Fans Choice award. Performers included Owen Riegling, Dean Brody, Tenille Townes, and High Valley with The Strumbellas.

At the box office, ‘Resident Evil’ scared up a franchise-best $60 million premiere, pushing the horror genre to new box office record for the year. By comparison, 16 years ago ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ earned $60.1 million as its total take in theatres. Well behind in second and third spots were ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey’.

The Toronto International Film festival wrapped up over the weekend and the Spanish civil war drama ‘The Black Ball’ won the People’s Choice Award. Among the cast are Penelope Cruz and Glenn Close. ‘I Play Rocky,’ directed by Peter Farrelly, was named first runner-up, while Simon Stone’s ‘Elsinore’ won the International People’s Choice Award.

The Voice is back with its Season 30 premiere tonight and tomorrow night, with new coaches Queen Latifah and Riley Green joining Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine… and Wicked comes to Netflix today.

And sad news today… Cindy Crawford’s son Presley Gerber has died while at a rehabilitation facility. He was just 27.
