Luke Combs’ Cover Of “Fast Car” Is Making History
July 5, 2023 8:45 amLuke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” is his 16th consecutive Number One song on the “Billboard” Country Airplay chart.
It’s also making history for Tracy. She’s now the first Black woman to have the sole songwriting credit on a Number One country hit.
Luke’s version is also the first country cover of a pop song to top the Billboard Country Airplay chart since Blake Shelton’s cover of Michael Buble’s “Home” back in 2008.
Luke was asked if Tracy has reached out to him, and he said she hasn’t.
But “Fast Car” has been covered and sampled by tons of artists, so that isn’t a surprise.
He didn’t mention if he’s tried to contact her.
Billboard estimates that Chapman has earned about $500,000 so far from his cover of the song.
Most of that comes from publishing royalties, although purchases and streams of the 1988 Chapman version have also increased 44% since Combs released his take on the tune.
