WWII Medals Found In Dumpster Revealed Father Was A War Hero, But Never Told Anyone
March 18, 2021 6:52 amWhen World War II medals, photos and letters were found tossed in a dumpster, it was a shock the family, who had no idea their dad was a war hero!
American Legion Post 5-44 Commander Jeff Truitt has been keeping the items safe since they were found tossed in a dumpster. No one knows why they were tossed away.
They belonged to Petty Officer 3rd Class Donald Helfer. He joined the Navy during World War II as an aircraft engine mechanic.
He flew almost 30 flights into enemy territory, received a Bronze Star, a Flying Cross, and a thank-you letter from President Truman AND NEVER TOLD HIS FAMILY!?
DONALD, who died in 1993, kept all of that a secret. His daughter only knew her dad as a police officer.
This binder Jeff saved now contains answers to questions she never knew to ask and is filling in so many gaps for her.
She even discoed a photo of her grandfather. It was the first time she ever saw his face.
Donald, a humble hero, is now finally getting the recognition he deserves.
