The Cure – Budweiser Stage – June 14, 2023

I had no expectations going into The Cure show at Budweiser Stage. Mostly unfamiliar with the band’s catalogue aside from Friday I’m in Love, I vowed to keep an open mind.

The day leading up to the show was a bit soggy and chilly, which would have suited the mood of the music, but the evening brought beautiful weather, perfect for an outdoor venue.

The crowd was very eclectic, all ages and styles albeit a little heavier on the crowd filled with teenage angst, many a few decades removed from being actual teenagers. It was a sea of black with smatterings of fishnet stockings, piercings and brightly coloured hair. There was more eyeliner than one of my grade 8 dances.

The Cure didn’t disappoint their loyal fans as they performed a long, tightly executed set to a sold- out crowd. Robert Smith, the eye-lined, lipsticked, disheveled lead singer has aged noticeably, but puts forth a familiar image to fans. The goth-rock band showcased all of their bruised and battered lyrics with the passion and pain The Cure is known for.

Fans got their money’s worth with a 29- song set list lasting well over 2 hours. At 64 Smith’s vocals are still distinctive and strong. The band sounded tight and took small moments to shine, but the evening was focused mainly on the music and the fans with no added frills.

At the end of the day this show may not have been the cure for my rock and roll blues, but they were undeniably the remedy for these fans.   Keep on rockin.
