Wellness Wednesday – May 6
May 6, 2026 11:44 amToday we kicked off something very exciting. Our first, official – Wellness Wednesday!
Wellness Wednesday is about taking time to understand why it’s so important we focus on our physical and mental health. I wanted to create a space to offer some practical ways you can take care of your mental and physical health.
Life’s Seasons Care & Support offers trauma based counselling to our area. And they offer their counselling services on a sliding scale making it affordable for EVERYONE.
Every Wednesday we’ll take about practical ways you can prioritize your mental health and share what you can do to help yourself.
Today we got the chance to talk to Paul Skuza – General Manager – of the Jerry McCaw Family Center YMCA. We talked about the real benefits of exercise and got a quick example of an easy move we can do in the workplace.
“Exercise is probably the best thing you can do when it comes to your overall wellness”
“Exercise is at the top of the list because it gets so many things happening in your body from your strength, to your cardio, to your mobility, to your flexibility… movement and exercise has such a significant, positive impact on your mental well being”
It’s never too late to get started. If you don’t have a routine yet – make it a priority. Start with a few days a week, half an hour – go through a simple routine – and mix it up. Strength, flexibility and cardio.
“It’s a confidence booster – exercise really helps with anxiety, and depression and some negative things we all deal with on a day to day, week to week basis.”
Paul says, “Closest thing, in my opinion, to a miracle drug or you know, a miracle pill, is physical exercise”
The “Y” has some great options to help you get started. Stop in and take a tour of the building and get an understanding of how they can help you get started on your own exercise routine.
Classes include – yoga, strength based, cardio based, water classes like aqua fit – pickle ball is popular right now – spin classes, badminton, run clubs and more.
Listen next Wednesday as we share more with the Y, a new move you can try and work and we’ll also chat with Jenny and Tina from Life’s Seasons Care & Support – trauma based counselling services about how to deal with grief in the community, and the exhaustion that comes from world events.
